FAQ

Is Solar Energy Affordable?

Utility companies are constantly increasing the rates that consumers pay for electricity. There are generous tax incentives for going solar, especially for Louisiana residents. Louisiana offers the best tax incentive for solar by offering a 50% tax credit. Louisiana’s 50% credit paired with the 30% federal tax credit represents a significant benefit come tax time. These credits paired with the savings you will receive from lowering your utility bills represent significant savings to you and your family over the long term.

Green Systems of Louisiana also offers financing methods that can reduce or even eliminate your up-front costs.

Can I install a solar system myself?

No. Solar systems must be installed by qualified electrical contractors or solar installers who have been trained and accredited.

How do I know if my home is suitable for a solar electric system?

Solar electric systems are a viable power solution for most homes. Green Systems can install solar systems on most homes in Louisiana where direct sunlight is available. The site must be free from shading to allow the system to work effectively . The direction that your roof is facing is also a factor, as a south-facing roof area is ideal, but a west- or east-facing roof can still produce 90 percent of the power of a south-facing roof. Our qualified technicians will discuss all factors with you during our consultation process.

Will a solar electric system produce enough energy to cover all my electricity needs?

You could buy a solar electric system large enough to cover all of your electrical needs, but this is not necessary. A solar system that displaces from 1/4 to 1/2 of your energy consumption will drastically reduce your electric bill. What’s more, battery backups allow your new solar system to deliver power during utility power outages. This is especially helpful in Louisiana during hurricane season.

What kind of maintenance is needed?

Most solar PV systems are stationary and collect the suns energy. There is sometimes a need to replace the fan in the inverter. There are also occasions where systems employ mechanical trackers to track the suns movement and the tracker motors may wear out. At Green Systems of Louisiana, we offer maintenance services to ensure that your system continues to perform over the years.

How long will the system last?

Our solar panels have a 25-year power warranty from the manufacturer. Solar inverters generally have 10 year warranties, and extended inverter warranties are available.

I’m planning on building a new house, when is the best time to install a solar system?

The best time to install a solar system is before laying the roof. By installing flashable mounting brackets at this stage, you will be protected from leakage. Green Systems of Louisiana employs professional solar installers and roofing technicians.

Do I need to install a new roof before the solar panels are installed?

Because the panels will last for at least 25 years, we want your roof to be in good condition and still under warranty. Installing a solar system on an aging roof that is in poor condition is not a good idea, as removing and reinstalling the solar system is a very costly process.

What is Net Metering?

Net Metering is the regulatory ability to get credit for the solar electricity that you generate and send to the utility grid. Power companies will usually adjust your monthly bills to reflect the value of electricity they received from you.

How do I know my solar system is performing to its full potential?

At Green Systems, we include an Internet monitoring system that gives you live performance data on your solar electric output. If the data shows that your system is not performing at the correct level, a system check will be run to locate the problem. If you would prefer for someone else to monitor your system on a regular basis, we can set up an off site monitoring program for you for an additional cost.
